Mercury was a former brand of the Ford Motor Company launched in 1938 by Edsel Ford, son of Henry Ford, to sell entry-level luxury cars positioned between entry level Ford cars and Lincoln-branded luxury vehicles, similar to GM’s Buick and Oldsmobile brands and Chrysler’s DeSoto division.
Mercury was dissolved in 2011 as Ford Motor Company refocused its efforts on the Ford and Lincoln brands. The final Mercury vehicle, a Grand Marquis, was completed on January 4, 2011.
One of the main factors that contributed to Mercury’s demise was the lack of a distinct brand identity and personality. Especially in its last two decades, Mercury vehicles lacked much to visually differentiate them from the other companies’ models that they were based on besides badging.
Popular Mercury models included the Cougar performance car, Capri sport compact, Grand Marquis full size sedan, Topaz compact car, Villager minivan, Mountaineer SUV, and more.
Most Mercury models were built on Ford model platforms rebadged and reworked to make them more comfortable and luxurious. The name Mercury comes from the messenger of the gods in Roman mythology, and in its early years Mercury was known for performance. Mercury vehicles were sold in the U.S., Mexico, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, and the Middle East.
Because most of them are based on more common Ford models, it is not hard to keep a Mercury on the road and repair it if it breaks.
